My philosophy regarding yoga and any new activity for kids or adults is this. If you can already do it perfectly you wouldn’t be taking a class. This is so relevant when talking about self regulation, body awareness and noticing the actions or feelings of others. Answers to some questions you may have are below.

 FAQs

  • No, children will be introduced to poses and yoga concepts each class in an age appropriate way. It is non competitive and children will go at their own pace. In time with improved body awareness and an understanding of yoga poses and breathing they will learn how the poses feels to them in their bodies.

  • Absolutely yes, Children’s yoga is very different to an adult class. There is lots of discussion, questions, silliness, giggling, references, thoughts that need to be shared in the moment. A big part of self regulation and awareness is taught when I encourage them to notice when another child is talking and how to listen carefully. In the after school program we do a show and share of items we are grateful for, the kids practice speaking to a group and listening to each other. We practice noticing when it is quiet time and respecting another child’s choice to relax.

  • Some kids find the relaxation at the end really difficult. The times for this vary from 3 to 5 minutes. They are given options to lay in the most comfortable position. Children will roll around and fidget, they have the option to sit up, sit on a chair and observe. I work towards an agreed quiet time which takes many physical forms. They will often find their own way to make this work.

  • Children
Any clothing that is stretchy or loose. Children can wear what ever they are comfortable wearing. We are in poses that require wide legs, bending at the waist, sitting crossed legged. Do a trial at home and see what clothes they can move the best in. For the after school classes be mindful of what they head to school in. Socks are required to stay on for sanitary reasons. Always bring a water bottle but have kids eat well before the class. Eating snacks while in poses isn’t safe, bring a hat for outdoor classes. Some children have their own mat which they can bring along.
    Adults
Top and bottom with stretch, breathable natural fibres are optimal. Poses in adult classes are conducted in bare feet.

  • For some series’ of classes I do offer a drop in option, I do recommend doing at least 2 classes back to back for the younger children to help with familiarity and building their comfort level. Drop me an email to discuss the options.

  • The only physical contact I make with children is a light touch on a shoulder to aid in organizing them into a circle ( you may think this is easy but it’s body awareness in action ) or when they are not hearing me when asked to move from a spot. During relaxation I sometimes use a smoosh ball which is large ball rolled on the back which gives pressure like a massage. No hand contact is made.

  • If it is a regular weekly program then it is best to use a carpeted ares for pre-school children or small squares. Older children can bring their own mat or have them supplied by the daycare or school. For group, stand alone classes I can provide 20 mats.
    Adults
Required to supply your own mat.

  • Yes, the after-school class on Wednesday’s at kingston Road church can take children who are turning 4 that year.

  • You will need a yoga mat, water bottle and a shawl/blanket/sweater for relaxation. If you have your own props you can bring them along. I provide yoga blocks, straps and knee pads. You have the option at any point to purchase your own from any store but it isn’t necessary. I will let students know each week what is required the following class for example if a rolled towel is needed for back support.

If you have any other questions please don’t hesitate to ask. Send me an email or text, I am always happy to help.
